Frequently asked questions:

What type of marine engines do you cover in the engine course?

The course is geared towards your own engine and boat systems, so you get tuition based around the engine you are most likely to be working on.  Our instructor is a qualified RYA Instructor, a full time marine engineer, with a aeronautical engineers background, a classic car enthusiast, and who lives aboard his own boat... there is very little he hasn’t seen!

Do I need a marine engineers licence to skipper a boat?

No, amazing as it may seem you don’t need ANY licence to skipper a leisure boat in the UK.  At the end of the day if you decide to stay with the syllabus, you will be issued with a RYA Diesel Engine Course certificate, but this is not a licence, it is merely a course completion certificate.  Having said that, most RNLI call outs are for easily preventable breakdowns, and can lead to a visit from the MCA, so this course is a must for boat owners, coastal/offshore workers and Coastal/Yachtmaster offshore candidates.  Not only that it will pay for itself several times over in call out fees and service charges.

Can the instructor teach me to service my engine?

Yes he can do that, but remember there will be an extra cost covering filters, belts, impellors etc.  As every engine is different the cost of a service pack can vary, but he can advise you on that before going ahead.

Is there a Diesel Engine exam at the end of the course?

No, there is no exam or diesel engine assessment, just a course book to fill in as you go along if you choose to follow the RYA syllabus.

Where will my Diesel Engine Certificate be valid?

Remember this is not a ‘licence’ it is a certificate and is not a legal requirement.  However, if you are looking to crew on other boats then this course will certainly put you ahead of other crewing candidates.

What is the right Diesel Engine Maintenance Course to take, there seems to be so many?

This one day course tends to be referred to in many ways -

Diesel Engine Maintenance Course, Diesel Engine Course, Diesel Course, Marine Diesel Engine course, RYA Diesel Engine (if you choose to follow the syllabus), Own Boat Engine Tuition, Marine Engine Tuition, Diesel Engine Tuition, Marine Engine Certificate, Marine Diesel Course, Engine Course, Marine Engine Service Course, Marine  Diesel Engines course, Diesel Fuel Engine Course, Diesel Boat Engines Course, Diesel Engine Fault Finding Course, Diesel Engine Mechanic Course, Diesel Engine Courses in Sussex, London and Brighton.

Why choose SailnetUK’s Diesel Engine Course?

Many RYA Sea Schools teach in a classroom, on engines of a particular model type that do not always work.  As anyone who has ever worked on boat engines will tell you, all engines are different and even finding and accessing component parts can be a challenge.  Information given in the classroom is not easily translated into the real life situations you may find on your own boat.  Our instructor will show you precisely how he would go about fault finding and servicing YOUR engine, and how he would gain access to all the important parts.  Not only that he will go talk you over the other systems on your boats such as electrics and plumbing on a one-to-one situation, so you can ask direct questions without interruption, or irrelevant input.

Are there any other fees involved in the Diesel Engine Course?

There are travel expenses to pay to the instructor if you live outside the Brighton area.  These equate to £1.25 per mile from Brighton’s Premier Marina.  Also you will be expected to supply your own overalls and tools  (the instructor will have his own).  If you book online, there are no ‘claw back’ credit card charges, VAT charges or any other charges, which can quickly push up the price of a ‘cheap’ Diesel Engine course.  If you book over the phone however, a 2% credit card charge (not Debit Card) will still apply.

Do you do group discounts, Diesel Engine special rates, special offers or ‘on location’ training abroad?

For practical reasons participants are restricted to max 3 per course so there are no ‘group discounts’.  The dates are selected by you, and confirmed upon checking instructor availability.  Training can be provided abroad, but obviously travel and accommodation costs will apply. We can arrange dedicated Diesel Engine Courses for London and other city based marina businesses.  As a Brighton Berth Holder Member (BMBHA) you will get a further 10% off our already competitive price. (Only £10 joining fee!).  Special prices and special offers apply to new bookings only.
