Frequently asked questions:

Do I need a sailing qualification to join SailnetUK's, Brighton Marina Sunday Sailing Club?

Yes, the club is primarily for newly qualified local sailors wanting to improve, or keep up their skills.  A minimum requirement is a 4 day RYA Learn to Sail Course  or if you can prove your experience with small yachts, we can in some cases wave this condition. If you are uncertain as to your 'level' take a look at our recommended '6_steps_to_sailing.pdf' for sailing

Is there a joining fee for the Sunday Morning Sailing Club?

No. There is no joining fee, administration fee, or any long term financial commitment.  You just book a week in advance, turn up and sail.  With prior arrangement we can take payment on the day.

Do I ever need to commit to a certain number of sailing days?

No, this really is just a drop in sailing club.  You can come once, or come along every Sunday.  There is limited sailing availability however, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Is there any formal sailing instruction?

There is always a qualified RYA sailing instructor on board to guide you, but the session really belongs to you, the crew.  If it's a light wind day, you may decide to try your hand at spinnaker flying, or perhaps some mooring practice and boat handling skills.  The guiding syllabus is the newly introduced RYA Level 3 Sailing Course or 'Intermediate Sailing Course' and works towards the RYA adnanced sailing modules such as:

RYA SEAMANSHIP SKILLS - sail independently.

How to handle the boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.

RYA SAILING WITH SPINNAKERS - kites course.

Everything you need to know to sail modern three-sail boats.

RYA DAY SAILING - go cruising.

Passage planning and decision making for small boat cruising.

RYA START RACING - go club racing.

The start line for enjoying club racing. All you need to know to get round the course.

RYA PERFORMANCE SAILING - get coached and sail better.

Improving your boat handling and confidence in performance boats.
Learning to get the most out of a  range of performance dinghies.

Where is the sailing area?

There is a 3 mile sailing limit from our base in Brighton Marina and plenty of space to practice boat handling skills around the Marina, which is one oft he biggest in Europe.

I am already a member of another Yacht Club, can I still come along?

There are many yacht clubs, sailing clubs and RYA training centres around the Sussex and South East Coast, all offering slightly different sailing activities.  Some don't even have any boats!  No matter you are still welcome at ours!  Whichever sailing club or yacht club you choose to be a member of, whether in the south east or elsewhere, always make sure the training centre, yacht club or sailing club is RYA affiliated and any tuition is endorsed by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association), otherwise minimum standards of boats, instructors and equipment cannot be guaranteed.  They may also be operating illegally, and you may not be properly insured and could be putting yourself at risk.

What questions should I ask a Sailing Club or Yacht Club before I join?

Some basic questions to ask:

Does the sailing club / yacht club own its own boats?

Is the sailing club / yacht club RYA affiliated?

Is the training provided RYA certified?

Does the sailing club / yacht club have third party liability insurance?

Are the training boats or yachts MCA coded or inspected regularly by the RYA?

Do the sailing instructors or yacht skippers have IN DATE instructor certificates from the RYA?

Do the sailing instructors or yacht skippers have IN DATE commercial endorsements?

Are the sailing instructor's certificates / commercial endorsements valid for the type of yacht they are training on?

Are the club managers, chief instructors and staff all CRB checked?

You will obviously have other questions more relevant to your personal circumstances but if the answer to any of the above is NO... then perhaps question why.

Why choose SailnetUK’s for my sailing?

We only use multi disciplined, experienced instructors who use their skills on a day to day basis.  We have one of the highest ratio’s of Senior Keel Boat and CRB checked instructors in the country, are endorsed by the RYA, Trading Standards, and are the only Sailing school to win not just one but TWO Tourism Excellence Awards for our sailing activities.  We also cap our courses and activities to a level that will ensure you get individual attention.

Are there any other hidden costs?

No.  If you book online, there are no ‘claw back’ credit card charges, VAT charges, parking fees or any other charges, which can quickly push up the price of a ‘cheap’ sailing club deal.  If you book over the phone however, a 2% credit card charge will still apply.

Why go to Brighton Marina to do my Sailing?

Some Training Centres can be draughty out of the way places incompatible with a sailing environment.  At Brighton Marina, you are in the heart of one of the biggest marinas in Europe, and only minutes from the open water.  Brighton Marina with its many cafe’s bars and restaurants is a great place to hang out afterwards too!  Our boats and our charter yachts, are modern and well maintained, and the sailing area - The Sussex Heritage Coastline - is part of England's newest National Park - The South Downs.

Do you do group discounts, special dates, sailing special offers?

For groups of 5 or more, we are happy to discuss your specific needs, whether it be a group discount rate, a date to suit you, holding a club day for your sailing club, marina staff, crew or business.  Please be aware though that all participants need to have minimum sailing qualifications.  These club prices and special offers apply to new bookings only and cannot be used in combination with other offers.

What does a typical sailing club session cover?

Anything and everything!  A introduction to chart work, the basics of seamanship right through to rigging, spinnaker training, racing or performance sailing.  It depends on the weather on the day and the mood of you and your crew. You will find it invaluable if you want to build your confidence and start making decisions on board.
